Prakriti is working for the welfare and rehabilitation of the suicide affected farmers’ families and also with other agrarian communities in Akola district since 2008. Despite various efforts by the state and by the individuals, civil society organizations, there is no respite from farmers’ suicides. Besides the agrarian distress, there are deaths caused by poisonous pesticides. Untimely and insufficient rains, has further deteriorated the agrarian economy.
Thus the overall picture of the rural economy is not encouraging and there are needs and challenges from every corner of the village. The younger generations of the farmer families do not want to engage in agriculture, as they feel that farming do not give regular income. Fragmentation of land has further made farming less rewarding, and thus contract farming is on rise, where the land owner gets little money in return of the contract farming. In this challenging situation, Prakriti is trying hard to continue its work and seek partnerships for better outreach.
